South African Demographics

South Africa is home to over 47.9 million people and is growing steadily at a rate of  0.281%.

Acknowledgement of the degree of diversity in South Africa is essential in order to spot communication opportunities. It could then be said that the high level of diversity in South Africa is a direct reflection of the marketing opportunities to be capitalised upon, as well as the variation and understanding needed in approaching each different group.

As it stands, South Africa is home to more than 47.9 million people and is growing at a rate of 0.281% per annum.

The ethnic groups are deterimined as 79% black african, 9.6% white, 8.9% coloured and 2.5% Indian or Asian.

With more than three- quarters of the South African Population being Black African, it has resulted in nine of the eleven official languages being of African. The most commonly spoken languages are as follows:

Isizulu - 23.8%

IsiXhosa - 17.6%

Afrikaans - 13.3%

Sepedi - 9.4%

English - 8.2%

Setswana - 8.2%

Sesotho - 7.9%

Xitsinga - 4.4%

Other - 7.2%
